But what exactly is flow? And more importantly, how can you train your mind to enter it more often?

What Is Flow State?

Flow is a state of complete immersion in a task. Your sense of time fades, distractions disappear, and every action feels fluid. In this state, performance feels easier — but the quality is higher.

Research shows flow occurs when three conditions are met:

  1. Clear goals — you know exactly what you’re trying to do
  2. Balance of challenge and skill — the task is hard enough to stretch you, but not so hard it overwhelms
  3. Immediate feedback — you can quickly see if you’re on track

What Happens in the Brain During Flow

Science shows that during flow, the prefrontal cortex (the part of your brain responsible for self-criticism and second-guessing) temporarily quiets down. This reduces self-doubt and frees up mental energy. At the same time, dopamine and norepinephrine — neurotransmitters linked to focus and motivation — increase, sharpening attention and reaction time.

The result? You perform better while feeling less mental resistance.

How to Trigger Flow More Often

You can’t force flow, but you can create conditions that make it more likely:

  • Set clear, specific goals before each session
  • Match challenge with skill — push yourself just beyond your comfort zone
  • Use rituals to focus — short breathing or visualization practices help narrow attention
